How to Locate the Inside Water Meter

Your Water meters measures the amount of water used in your home. In many communities, the meter is placed outside the home. This helps the local water authority read the meter without setting an appointment. But, in colder climates, outside water meters can freeze and burst, causing damage and wasting water. So many homes in colder climates are fit with indoor water meters. Many communities are retrofitting indoor water meters with outdoor display units to make the meter reader's job easier.

  1. 1

Look around the outside of your home. If you have an indoor meter but do not have a regularly scheduled meter reading, you have an outside remote. Look around the outside surface of your home for the remote. It will be labeled and should be readily accessible. Note the location on the house. Because of the limited range of the remote, your indoor water meter will be close to the meter.

  2. 2

Go inside the house. Start looking on the outside wall near the remote. Oftentimes the remote will be on the other side of the wall from the kitchen sink. Often, in single-floor homes, the water meter is located under the kitchen sink. It may also be locate in a utility closet near the washing machine.

  3. 3

Go down to the basement level of the home. Look on the front outside wall of the home. The water meter is often located in the center front wall of the home or a front corner of the home. Often older meters will be located in the basement. Often the home's water shut-off valve is near the water meter.
